if you place an obsidian block and a end crystal on the side of it it automatically placed on the top of the obsidian block.
Steps to Reproduce:
Place down an obsidian block.
Whilst looking at one of the side faces of the obsidian block, attempt to place down an end crystal.
Observed Behavior
End Crystal is placed on top of block whose side is being targeted.
Expected Behavior:
You are not able to place end crystals on top of blocks when targeting their side faces. You should only be able to place them if you were to target the top face of a block.

as commented by @lolad this has something to do with endercrystal plasement and it wouldent be able to be placed on the side unless some bedrock or obsidan was there, could you please confirm that if there was obsidan beside it that it still wouldent place where you wanted it to go?
thanks in advance

I am also able to confirm this behavior in 21w37a. Here are some additional details regarding this issue as this report is quite unclear.

Relates to MC-237476.
I think this is probably WAI to allow for easier end crystal placement (since it couldn't go on the side anyway)
