Trader llamas keep spitting (with some accuracy) at quite large distances

A wandering trader spawned on a small island. I hit the wandering trader to see if I could make the llamas hit the trader (they can). Then, I walked away and swam across to another island that is roughly 30 blocks away. To my surprise, the llamas continued shooting at me even at that distance, even hitting me once.
