Whoops! Please disregard the above comment as I experienced the behavior in 1.17.1 and not 1.18 Pre-release 5.

I can no longer reproduce this problem in 1.18 Pre-release 5, likely because this was fixed alongside MC-231272.

I can also confirm that this appears fixed in 1.18 pre-release 5
