Fishing rod will not show line or bobber when cast

At first, I thought the fishing rod would just not cast. I checked that the right click on my trackpad is working in other areas of Minecraft. I have also tried relogging. Then I noticed that the durability was going down even though it didn't appear to cast. I am relying on the water particle effects when fishing, and it does yield fish. However, there is no visible line or bobber at all.
