no end pillars

I entered the end, and there was a massive island, like 200 blocks high from where I spawned, and there was no end pillars. they could possibly be underground or something, but the dragons nest was on top like nothing happened. the enderdragon was flying underground, trough end stone, and even if the end pillars were underground, they were not healing her.
