Waterlogged caves become floating water tunnels when they intersect with open-air caves/ravines.
What I expected to happen was...:
The ravine/cave to become waterlogged.
What actually happened was...:
A strange bug causing strange but interesting floating water tunnels.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Find a world where a waterlogged cave intersects with a ravine or cave, e.g. -8392751900383477890
2. Look around, e.g. -629 27 78
3. Contemplate life.

It's not just ravines. It affects all caves.
Example: Seed=1
Coords=-210, 11, 141.
Coords=-317, 11, 133.
They appear to be quite common. (The above coords are below an ocean biome.)
Came across this as well.
Seed: 900018674
/execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s -113.99 20.00 -1453.70 22.48 13.44
Can confirm in 21w17a.

Can confirm.
Judging by the screenshot provided by @unknown, I've managed to encounter something similar in 21w19a, therefore I do not believe that this issue has been fixed in this version. You can see this through the use of the following seed + coordinates.
Seed: 7322373498288204599
Coordinates: /execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @s 31141.57 22.05 -1131.92 147.58 25.48

Still not fixed.

Can confirm in 21w20a.

Can confirm in 1.17 Pre-release 1

This issue still happens in release 1.17
