I don't know if it's a bug or not, but I used to place a solid block right above child chickens and pick the raw meat with suffocation damage, but the moment they became adults, they would be flung outside.
I didn't see this phenomenon in 1.16.5

Does MC-9568 describe your issue?

I think it's relevant if the solution to MC-9568 is to move to coordinates where they don't take suffocation. I'm not sure though.
