So I was playing on my brand new survival world on the new cave update (part 1), I created a nether portal using the lava and water method, I go though the portal, and when I come out, it takes me to another place, where I never built a portal. In the attachment below, I have a recording of an example of this problem. This is one of many times I tried using the portal.
UPDATE: The footage I tried to send was over the limit of 10 MB so I could not upload it

This time it was in 1.17, unlike the listed versions in that thread. Is there any difference with the version being different? The thread listed is 1.13.2-1.16.3.

Probably WAI. I have used a workaround forever it seems. To keep the overworld portal in a designated position move the nether side portal to X÷8, Z÷8. Where X and Z are the overworld coordinates.

Ok, I got some of the footage, but the 2nd video I recorded was more than 10 MB in file size. The missing video was footage of me going through the portal.

Ok this was just a common issue woth portals, if you try and build a portal in the overworld, and the coordanites in the nether don't match up, then it will build the nether portal in an open place, which can cause some issues woth getting out.

I'm going ahead and resolving this issue as a duplicate of MC-149705, as they seem to describe the same process. That ticket was resolved as Working as Intended by Mojang.
