When a creative player has a full inventory and walks over an item on the ground, that item is picked up and destroyed, rather than leaving the item on the ground.
To reproduce:
Enter creative mode
Drop an item on the ground
Fill up your inventory with items (offhand not required), leaving no room for the item on the ground to enter your inventory
Walk over the item on the ground and "pick it up" anyways, destroying the item
