"[player] took fall damage" pick up ender pearl then died

so I was just mining cobblestone for stone bricks oh I was also in a revine getting rid of the water I fell took only 2 hearts and then I heard an enderman so I want to go look for it and kill it when it dropped the ender pearl I died of fall damage for no apparent reason. I'm glad I wasn't on hardcore
