Sweet Berries won't grow properly in the nether

I was on a server with my friend and I had gotten dirt and brought it to the nether to grow Sweet Berries, and my friend got necessary stuff for Glow Berries. However, the Glow Berries grow properly, but the Sweet Berries won't. Only 2 of them grow actual berries. I thought it was just a small issue and could be fixed with some Bone Meal, though after trying it still only the 2 that were working beforehand would grow the berries on the bush.
