When you change to use spectator mode the game crashes if you try to go under the surface when trying to load everything.
-Xmx2G of ram allocated
When using -Xmx8G of ram allocated it doesn't crash but it does hover between 1500MB and 4900MB of ram utilisation before it dumps excess from the pool.

Just came to report the same bug. This happens less frequently on lower render distance - I can't prove it out but I think it's happening when I have both the abovve ground loaded in and then go underground and start to see that as well. Having both seems to be too much. I have -Xmx10G allocated but it doesn't use that before it crashes. Usually about 4000 on crash. 2080 Ti, doubt it's that.
First world I was able to crash multiple times in a row was seed -1801207849904378733 at 3800, -900 (the mushroom island), 32 chunks, F3+N spectator, dive into the ground and crash, every time.
Exit code: 0
Also, I have tried waiting until all the above ground chunks are loaded and no use - still crashes. Down to 24 chunks, crashed again ... 16 chunks is slow but doesn't crash. (My computer regularly handles 1.17 32 chunks perfectly.)
Edit: I take it back, I can crash it well below 16 chunks on seed: 4370938790926065660 Method: Fly into the side of that mountain in spectator, crash every time.
