When both the entities and players are added to a team, and the 'friendlyFire' is set to 'false', the players can still deal damage to the entities..
Steps:
/summon villager ~ ~ ~
/team add ateam
/team modify ateam friendlyFire false
/team join ateam @e[type=villager]
/team join ateam
