Not sure if this is a bug or intended by design. However, if a bed is placed upon tall grass, it will automatically chop the grass and float in mid air.
Feel free to close if this is not a bug.

As @unknown stated, beds no longer require supporting blocks since a 1.13 pre-release.

Beds have always been able to exist without support; 1.13 fixed it so it doesn't need it for placement.
