Problem switching item

Good evening,
I've been playing Minecraft for 5/6 years on Mac. I've always had problems switching from one item to another in the player's hand as a turn of the mouse wheel doesn't always mean a change of item (change one item every 10 spins). I was wondering since I've changed multiple mice but the problem has always occurred if it was a problem with the game for the Mac version.
