I have a bunch of maps that are explored. previously they showed player location. Now they do not. Supposedly, one has to combine them with a compass to make this possible. When I go to any station (whether it be anvil, cartography table, crafting table, what have you) compass cannot be placed on station with map, or, in the case of the anvil, there is a big red X preventing combination.

The four maps I tested I was not in the map area, however the marker was not on the side/ corner of the map where it would have been previously
update: appears to not be an issue with woodland explorer maps or buried treasure maps, and only an issue when I am far enough away that the player locater would be a small white circle on the edge or corner of map. Marker seems to appear when I get close enough to map area for locator to be a larger white circle on side/ corner of map
Only explorer maps are supposed to have the "far away" player marker from what I recall, but I cannot seem to find a source right now.
Huh. well that really makes the explorer maps quite valueable from a navigation standpoint. The most valueable thing in a shipwreck, actually. Any particular reason why the "far away" markers were removed from regular maps?
I don't think the "far away" marker was removed intentionally, since it's tracked as a bug in MC-122834.
In Java Edition all maps have the player locators, only in bedrock are non-locator maps.
