Internal exception: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out

I have found similar issues regarding this Read timed out error on this tracker, but none that were resolved for any reason other than outdated mine craft version.

I am live in the UK, I can connect to servers that are based in the UK just fine.

When I try to connect to a server that is based in the US I get this error. It also happenes with some EU based servers.

I have called my ISP to see if it is a networking issue, but they couldn't offer me any help.

Recently, I have been accpeted to play on a whitelisted survival server that is based in the US. When I try to connect, I see the screens:
-Logging in
-Downloading Terrain (pause for roughly 30 seconds here)
-Internal Exception java.net.SocketTimeoutException. Read timed out.

and then I am returned back to the main screen. Meanwhile players who are successfully connected to the server have told me that they "see me" logging in, and then log off, presumably once I time out.

To add to the frustration, the server has many players who connect from the UK and do not have any of these problems.

I get this error occasionally as well, ironically when joining the Element Animation server (a UK hosted server, or at least I think it is) when I live in the US. Trying to sign in/out a few times and making sure there isn't a little red "Connection Error" instead of the wireless bars written in the server selection screen usually works.
I want to say duplicate of MC-5675, and I think it's just because of the fact that the server is hosted so far away and various issues with internets.

Hmm, Well I can't understand how I living in London, connect connect the US based server, when someone else who lives just outside of London can... Doesn't make any sense?

Like I said, internets stuff. There are people who somehow get internet access during power outages and storms, I can't tell you why it happens like that, just that it sometimes does and it's not particularly permanent.
A good judge is that, if on your server selection screen, there is a little red "Connection Error" written where the wireless signal bars should be, it probably wont connect. Refresh, reload, keep trying to log in.

On my server selection, the server I am trying to connect to is listed, and It doesn't show any connection error, and there are 2-3 wireless signal bars, pretty reliably. So again I cant understand... my minecraft client can see, and get a response from the server, since it shows up on my listings, but it won't let me connect.

This has happened to me, although I don't know where the server is located. I am in the US.
