Place down a sticky piston facing upwards
Place a block of your choice one block to the right and two blocks upward from the piston
then place a redstone torch on the side of the block towards the piston
you will notice the redstone torch manages to activate the piston with a 1 block air gap in between

In your setup, the redstone torch sends a block update to the piston, making it extend. This behavior works for pistons in all directions if the piston is given a block update.

Again, that's MC-108. pistons get power from 2 blocks above too, by any power source, regardless of facing direction.
That it's only from above and not other directions is not a bug.
