/damage command no longer launches fireballs

Try running the following command on chat in 1.20.4 and 1.20.5 respectively.

/execute summon fireball run damage @s 1 generic by @p

In 1.20.4, the summoned fireball would fire in the direction the player was facing, which was a useful behavior for mapmaking.

But in 1.20.5, this behavior has been removed. The fireball fails to take damage and stays where it was summoned.

I belive this was intended and you have to set the velocity of the fire ball yourself when summoned on a command if you have anymore reasons to think this was a bug please contact me.

Thank you for your report!
After consideration, the issue is being closed as Working as Intended.

Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
Things such as graphics, sounds, world creation, biomes, redstone, villagers, and animals may not work the same in current versions.

2 Notes:

  1. This applies to other projectiles like Wind Charges.

  2. I know this is unlikely to mean anything, but PLEASE reconsider this. This ruins a lot of functionality that the /damage command added and was critical to a lot of my datapacks. Now they are in an awkward limbo where they only work in a specific set of 1.20.5 snapshots where the Wind Charge and projectile /damage both work.

I knew this was a bug from the beginning, but it was extremely useful because you could input a selector and output a movement vector, which could be used for creating custom projectiles easily. Until we get some kind of /motion (yes, I know that is a suggestion and not a bug) I think that this should be looked at again.
