Works on basically all versions, to set it up get a tool, I used a wooden pickaxe, and drop it at the same time as you switch to another hotbar slot(you should see a pickaxe both on the ground and in your hotbar) now the pickaxe on the ground is the real one, the one in your hotbar is the ghost one now, with the ghost one, mine a block, which is faster to mine with your tool than with your hand(I used sandstone) It should break but still be visible where it was.
Now the glitch is working, with my example the sandstone will disappear after a while, because the game thinks you are still mining the sandstone with your hand but if you pick up your real pickaxe and select it or select any other pickaxe it will immediately break and drop the sandstone.
You can play around with this glitch and get wireless redstone for a limited time maybe with obsidian, but the block has to stay loaded. Also on older versions the timing is a little different.
The first demonstration shows my sandstone and wooden pickaxe example on the latest snapshot, the second shows the glitch with obsidian and a netherite pickaxe in 1.20.1

It kind of is MC-154881 now that I look at it, but only the part I call setup, maybe you use a mod that changes the timing? for me on vanilla it's just pressing at the same time.
I think this is MC-154881.
If there's a distinction I'm missing please let me know by opening a new bug report addressing that distinction, with steps to reproduce, a video and explanation of observed VS expected results

Thanks for the video. I can reproduce it, however the timing is very hard to get right. You need to press a number key that the pickaxe is not on while pressing the Q (drop) key, and the timing can be difficult.
