Opening Screenshots via in-game link bricks the Photos app

Update: The Windows Photos app has updated resolving this issue.

Whenever screenshots are opened via the in game link nothing happens. As well as making any image open via file explorer also not open. This can only be fixed by closing the photos.exe process in task manager.

Note: If the photos app is currently running i.e. (A photo is open or the main app is open)  then the photo will succesfuly open.

Seems to be that Minecraft is somehow opening the photos app into a broken state.

I have the same issue, tried on two different computers. Even reset the photos app and minecraft entirely.

Can confirm! I thought this was an issue with the Photos app itself when it happened to me. I cannot seem to fix the issue, even by reinstalling the Photos app.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Ensure you are running a computer with Windows 10 or 11 installed.

  2. Go to the Settings app, then Apps > Default apps > Photos.

  3. Set the default app for the file extension *.png to Photos, if it is not already.

  4. Open the latest Minecraft version. Take a screenshot by pressing F2, or whatever your screenshot key is binded to.

  5. Ensure that the Photos app is not open. Then click on the file in chat.

  6. ❌ Note how the Photos app does not open. This prevents the app from opening always, even when viewing an image file from Windows Explorer.

Fix

To fix this issue, run the command below in the Command Prompt (open by pressing Win+R and typing cmd):

taskkill /f /im photos.exe

This does not need to be run as an administrator.

Killing the photos.exe task in Task Manager also fixes the issue.

The issue will reappear after clicking on the screenshot file in Minecraft. Going into the screenshots directory is the best way to view your screenshots until this issue is fixed (located in %appdata%\.minecraft\screenshots). Alternatively, use a different default image-viewing app.

On another note, this also happened to me on 1.20.4. This means it may have been an update to the Photos app that caused Minecraft screenshot links to break the app.

I can still reproduce this on 1.21, please do not remove it from the Affects Version/s field.

1.18.2 has also been occurred as well. When Photos App break the Minecraft Screenshot Links failing to open the in-game screenshot.

It appears that "Photos" App has updated. Try again if see what happened to this screenshot link for Minecraft.

I cannot reproduce this issue anymore (in 1.21.1). An update to the Photos app itself has likely fixed this issue.

My Photos version is 2024.11070.31001.0.

Same goes to me as well

My Photo Versions - 2024.11070.31001.0

Resolving as Cannot Reproduce per the comments and my experience.
