Boat Models are not symmetrical (Front and rear members are different lengths)

The sides (long) vertical members of a boat are equal in length.

The front and rear (short) vertical members of a boat are not equal in length.

The model (view in image) shows an overlap of members at the rear of the boat, and just 'corner touching' at the front.

Can confirm. Though, the behavior could be intentional provided the fact that it indicates to the player which side is the front, and which is the back (not considering the oars)
