With some map editing one can create pistons that visually feature their front texture on all 6 sides. If a block update is applied to this block, the game will crash. The enclosed crash report resulted from placing a Redstone block next to the piston. While placing and removing an iron block (as a generic example I chose) next to it crashed the game, removing the Redstone block didn't have any effect.

There are many features in Minecraft that are completely inaccessible without external programs and are still supported. Why should this mechanic be an exception? Also I neither broke the game nor complained; I filed a bug report for an issue I randomly came across.
Duplicate of MC-13156.
This would explain why search didn't show me MC-13156. I only searched for open issues.
If you use 3rd party tools to break the game, please don't complain about it here.
