Some chunks are completely unlit until a player walks on them or a torch is placed. When the player moves away, and some time (it varies) has passed, the chunk becomes unlit again.

Even though that one specifies sunlight, lighting in general in minecraft (sunlight included) is based off the same engine. So while you may not see it as the same issue, it really is. The lighting engine has issues and when they do the overhaul on it in the next few major updates, these issues should be resolved (hopefully).

Talven81, that is also not the same issue. Read it again. Just because there are multiple lighting issues, it does not mean they should all be reported in the same ticket. Please re-open this ticket.
Kyle, again while it may not seem like it Talven81 is correct on the duplicate bug. the very first set of screen shots are directly related, though on the ceiling it is directly related to the issue your having.
The bugs that get reported are grouped together, or else we'd have 500,000 open bugs because of tiny/minute differences between one bug and another when the base issue is the same.
Your bug is directly related to the lighting engine, as is the bug Talven81 found. The bugs are worded by everyday people who may or may not know how to phrase what they are looking at in a bug (not saying they're dumb, just saying we're human). The Mods and Mojang understand the underlying problem when they read a bug, and will call a bug duplicate when the underlying problems between bugs are the same.
