Activating the elytra when falling sometimes ignores falling damage

Activating the elytra just before landing on the ground while holding the space bar can sometimes ignore large amounts of fall damage.
You can hear the landing on block sound play, but no damage is inflicted and the 'crunch' fall damage noise does not play.

Steps toΒ Reproduce:

  1. Equip an elytra

  2. Get high enough to take fall damage from falling (example; using a Riptide trident to launch the player upwards).

  3. While falling, have a vertical viewing angle of <= 38.7

  4. Right before you hit the ground, hold space to activate the elytra

Is the issue you describe unique to 24w46a?

This is still prevalent in 1.21.4 Pre-release 1

Does this issue happen in 1.21.3?

I could reproduce this issue in 1.21.3, I have added the affected version to the report.

The cracking sound plays, but the player does not flash red or take damage:

I cannot reproduce this in 1.21.4-pre3.

Can confirm for 1.21.4 Pre-release 3

After consideration, the issue is being closed as Won't Fix.

Please note that this is not the same as Working as Intended, as this bug report correctly describes behavior in the game that might not be the intended or desirable behavior, but it will not be fixed right now. Sometimes, this is because the issue reported is minor and/or impossible to change without large architectural changes to the code base.
