Unintended Placement of Sugarcane

Summary of the Bug: Sugarcane can be placed underwater or in lava under specific conditions, creating an air pocket effect similar to doors placed underwater.

What I Expected to Happen: I expected that sugarcane would either break immediately upon being placed underwater or in lava, or it would not be placeable at all.

What Actually Happened: The sugarcane was successfully placed underwater (or in lava) and remained intact. It created an air pocket effect, much like how doors behave when placed underwater. The sugarcane could be placed continuously upwards until it extended out of the liquid.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Surround the intended placement area of the sugarcane with water or lava, including the block where the sugarcane will be placed.

  2. Ensure there is water adjacent to the block where the sugarcane will be placed (or that the block that the sugarcane will be placed on is sugarcane itself).

  3. Place the sugarcane.

  4. Observe that the sugarcane creates an air pocket and can be stacked vertically until it extends out of the liquid.

Dhranios, you are correct, I should have added that this is evident in the vanilla Minecraft 1.21.4
