Audio drivers detect Minecraft as a Surround sound content

This is only happening with the new launcher. If I play 1.5.1 Minecraft with the older launcher, this will not happen. The only reason I noticed this, is because if I don't turn on my surround sound switch, all the sound in minecraft comes out the right side. I don't feel like the surround sound is genuine 7.1 with minecraft, it seems to sound exactly the same. Every forum thread I found about minecraft surround sound says that it doesn't exist, and there is no mod to add it. Is this a not yet implemented feature? Maybe the updated java libraries are forcing it? Any information or conformations would be great!

In fact we we do have positional audio in Minecraft. You can absolutely hear where sounds are coming from when you have a capable headset (and i guess also a proper surround speaker set).

Other than us launching the game in a standalone VM (where for the old version we re-used it) there is nothing different. Maybe this makes enough of a difference for some drivers to trigger some other behavior?

I'm only commenting to help the user/OP, I'm not asking for this to be reopened as I don't believe its a bug in MC specifically.

This does affect the Logitech G35 headsets too, even with the newest 8.45.88 drivers with the 1.6 launcher. MC 1.5.x and lower are not affected by this. It is an odd issue though. In my case when I disable surround on the headset (via the hard switch) the walking sound of the player only comes out on the right side...only when walking on anything other than wood. When I walk on wood, the sound is correctly coming from both sides. Since testing 1.6 snapshots I've had to enable the surround to hear things correctly, but am not a fan of surround in MC. I'm too used to stereo.

Also I recorded a video in Fraps and played it in VLC to see if it was the headset drivers or MC...but the audio recorded in Fraps was fine. So it has to be the logitech driver.

To resolve this, I simply changed the driver for the headset to Microsoft's "USB Audio Driver". Yes you kill the surround feature, but the Minecraft sound works fine.

This was very similar to an issue with a version of Flash that came out some time ago where flash video sound only played on the right part of the headset. I forget if Logitech fixed it in later drivers or Adobe did in a Flash update.

In any case, I hope this helps anyone having this issue.

If that is the case, it might be useful to report this to Logitech so they can actually fix it?

I found a resolution! 🙂
Install the Logitech G35/930 drivers from the Original Software CD.

You can still use surroundsound while listen to music or skype with friends and playing Minecraft >1.6!

This is a support issue, and should be dealt with on the forum. Luckily I have the same hardware, so to expedite the resolution...

1. Do not use the installation disk these drivers are old and problematic. Update to the latest 8.46.27 software at Logitech support
2. Turn surround sound on, on your headset, you are running in stereo mode which causes the left-right walking sound problem. This button is on the back of your G930 headset and should be in the DOWN position.

Screenshot attached.

Yes, this is the problem! When you push the button down surround will be activated. Then when you play Minecraft and listen to music the sound is unnormal crappy!
When I push the button up the music will be played normaly but your minecraft sound is only on the right ear.

When you install the old drivers the sound will be normal in surround and normal mode (button up/down)

I am also having this problem. Doesn't happen with the old launcher, presumably because older LWJGL.
