Well my minecraft portal spawns in midair luckily above water. Else i would have been hurt.
I am standing on some nether racks you are watching the portal from below

If not for my diamond stuff and the water i would have been dead. that were 20 blocks. so.. intended.. and you know.. that is a problem if you are slow while going out of portal and even my computer has trouble not overstepping while going trough. So i am dead, by design - by intend. thank you. i hate this desing.
This is by design. The portal has a ledge either side for you to stand on.
