Cannot reproduce in 1.4.5. What mods is the server running?
Can you provide your superflat string please.
I've tried to reproduce this, but only saw 1 xp orb which I was able to collect, and I can't be certain that I didn't hit the slime at some point giving me credit.
I'll confirm that the behaviour is as reported, though I believe its working as intended.

This ticket is invalid as it relates to a modded or 3rd party client/server.
Any non-standard client/server build needs to be taken up with the appropriate team, not Mojang.

"Resolved", with a resolution of "Works As Intended".
Which mods are you running there?
I've definitely experienced this issues, but in my experience is rare. For it to be happening every time is interesting, and may help resolve it.

My guess? Some other process is forcibly taking focus away from the game. This causes the game to automagically pop the menu up.

So are you saying this is reproducible on a vanilla server?
Confirmed. As commented, the effect remains as mobs will ignore you, this is purely a rendering issue.
Is this any type of renamed item? I tried with my main renamed pickaxe and it was still renamed once removed from the enderchest.
