Minecraft world seeds do not work properly

Last weeks I did some tests involving world seeds and I discovered they do not work properly. The point of seeds should be to recreate the exact same world as someone else, correct?

When I look up a random Let's player that starts his first episode in Minecraft 1.6.2, and I use the exact same seed as him in my Minecraft 1.6.2, the world start out the same. But when I walk the same directions as the LPer, things start to change.

It only involves certain areas. Mostly deserts, plains and mountains are exactly the same, including every tree, flower and all of the high grass. Forests are also the same except for the sporadic area in which all the trees are located different.

Jungles are almost completely different. Sometimes even the dirt blocks and rocks are positioned different. Lava and Water streams sometimes differ too.

So: 90% of the world looks the same, but 10% Always looks different than someone else. I recreated the world multiple times to see if it was randomized, but my results are always exactly the same as my previous attempt.

Something is bugging my world seeds. Is it Java, the operating system or something else? I do not know, but I believe it is a bug.

I am willing to provide a link to an LPer video and multiple screens of my world to prove that there are differences in world generation with the same seed, but I won't do that now, because if this isn't a bug, I won't have to waste an hour of my time.

Thanks! 🙂

Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame and attach the crash report ([minecraft|http://hopper.minecraft.net/help/finding-minecraft-data-folder]/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt) here.

Please provide that seed and the coordinates, then can I attach some screenshots of the jungle and you can compare if my screenshots do match yours or those from the video.
One might assume that 3rd party sources do not necessarily have unmodded Minecrafts...

Seed: "PHippocrates" (without quotation marks)
I added two screens showing the coördinates
I also added the crash report. (I activated the crash directly after taking the second screenshot)

Here are my screenshots

Okay, in contrary to what I expected, your reults do match mine and not that of the LPer.

This "issue" is something I experience a lot, even if it appears that a video user doesn't use any mods and uses the same MC version as mine.

kumasasa

That's completely the opposite we've made here.
Except from some decoration features new worlds generated to reproduce ticket features are excactly identical. There is no degree of freedom in being identical, either the worlds are identical or are completely different - and not matching ca. 90%.

I'll try to find another random LPer this evening. Someone who uploaded this week and who I see creating a new world with a seed in the first episode. I'll play along until I see a difference (and I probably will). After that I'll post the results.

Arjan de Vries

Allright, I looked around and found another LPer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o21Z46XkcqQ

You can see the seed he is entering "Joeyissexy" and his version number, 1.6.2
At the start I'm chopping down the exact same tree as him. (1:08 in the video). But his x and z coördinates seem to differ two blocks from my coördinates. I added a screenshot to show that.

He ended with 8 pieces of wood, I ended with nine.

Then, I added a screenshot that correspods to 1:28 of the video. Differences in tree growth are visible.

Then, the last screenshot corresponds to 2:49 of the video and shows a lake. The lake has a different shape than the shape I generated.

This is the best proof I could find. Trees are differently placed, lakes are different, and dirt blocks too.'

I'm very curious as to why that is. 🙂

Mustek

Worldgen is different from the "clutter", which are trees, grass and other terrain features, These are randomly generated.

Arjan de Vries

Then why do I Always get the same result on my computer and not a random result each time I reload?

Mustek

Nevermind that, just tried, seems like it could've been changed a while back. http://up.mustek.be/2013_Q81M9.jpg

Arjan de Vries

What do you mean exactly? 🙂
Did you look at the post I made at 6:32? It's the best example I could find. And every time I reload the world, the trees and plants are exactly at the same location as my previous try. It differs between (some?) users.

Mustek

You don't know for sure if they haven't added some unobtrusive mods.

Arjan de Vries

That's possible, you never know. So the plant growth in the seed isn't random after all?

kumasasa

We cannot take care about some 3rd party stuff without knowing what version, mods etc. people there have running.
The fact that with the same seed at the same coordinates the worlds generated by you, me and Mustek are absolutely identical justifies the resolution "Cannot reproduce."

kumasasa

Apparently not even the placement of tall grass and flowers is truely random. Maybe that changed some versions ago.

kumasasa

BTW: Seeds are not compatible across versions.

Arjan de Vries

Allright, thanks guys! 🙂 Maybe I'll try finding some jungles between two modless 1.6.2 MC PC's of my own, when I find anything, I'll let you know. But I probably won't.

Thanks again!
