Invisible Items

I created a new world the day before and got some standard tools and food before saving and quitting for the night. When I logged back in the next day, I saw nothing in my inventory except the number of items I had and durability stats. Opening up the inventory, I saw that my tools and food were still there; they were just invisible. I logged out and back in, and still the same situation, the items appeared in my hand, just not in my inventory, and it was only food items and tools that were in the hotbar.
