floating sand stays on top of a lever

i was playing around with the floating sand in the AMPLIFIED world type and found this glitch where you can place levers below sand without mods or external editors, and the same thing happens with vines.
to reproduce, just find floating sand (other versions not verified) and place a lever under it.

A little bit of MC-750, but that's interesting: Placing a lever does not cause a block update like other blocks. Could be interesting for some contraptions.

That is correct. Buttons and Levers don't always call on a block update (levers and vines haven't appeared too since, at least 1.5). So when the world generated sand in the air, placing levers on then bottoms won't make them fall. since no block update is performed.

Have you tried breaking a sand block next to other sand blocks (force a block update) that have levers on the bottom. I'd be surprised if the sand doesn't fall.

Actually, it does generate a block update, but sand doesn't fall if a non-solid blocks (torches, signs, etc) are beneath it in general. It's an interesting sub-case of a common trick. This can be confirmed by placing a block next to sand with a lever under it (manually updating the block). Destroying the lever will trigger another block update, and since the sand now has nothing beneath it, it will fall.
