Copper Golem refuses to open copper chest when in a pit

The configuration of the pit is too hard to explain in words, so I have included an image so you can see how this is laid out. When the copper golem is spawned in a four block deep pit with a roofed-over (not blocked off) copper chest and a double chest with a hopper on top, the golem will refuse to open its copper chest. It will walk right up to it before spinning around and climbing back up on the double chest and hopper again. It will walk off the hopper from time to time to repeat its useless process.
