Dragon Egg did not spawn because of max height y256

I played at a Minecraft smp with friends and we fought for the dragon egg so we did pillar up at x0 z0 so the egg spawns there, HOWEVER we pillared up to y256 and as the dragon was killed the egg was nowhere to be find in any dimensions. I also tested it in singleplayer and it did not spawn
