Dear Mojang Studios Team,
I am writing as a long-time Minecraft player and as someone with a strong interest in geology and paleontology.
I would like to provide some constructive, science-based feedback regarding the design of the cephalopod-inspired mob that is often referred to as a “nautilus”.
In its current form, the design does not morphologically resemble a true nautilus (Nautilus), but instead aligns much more closely with an ammonite.
The main points supporting this are:
the shell is strongly planispiral and disk-shaped, which is characteristic of ammonites rather than nautiluses,
the body appears weakly integrated with the shell, whereas in modern nautiluses the soft body is largely enclosed and closely associated with the shell,
the only feature suggesting a nautilus is the color pattern, which is an aesthetic trait and not an anatomical or taxonomic characteristic.
As a result, the design comes across as a hybrid: ammonite-like morphology combined with nautilus-inspired coloration. From a biological and paleontological perspective, this is misleading and can be frustrating for players interested in Earth sciences and the history of life.
I greatly appreciate Minecraft’s use of scientific inspiration, which is precisely why I wanted to raise this concern.
A possible solution would be either:
clearly identifying the mob as an ammonite, or
adjusting the shell geometry and body–shell integration to better reflect a true nautilus.
Thank you for your time and for considering this feedback. I hope it can be taken as a constructive contribution from the community.
Kind regards,
Julia
