Sugar Cane failing to grow

Sugar can does not grow after and area is unloaded and loaded back in again. so if you plant sugar cane, unload the chunks of the area it is in, and then come back, the sugar cane will never grow. But if you stay in the same area and never unload it the sugar cane will grow.

What happens when you plant the sugar cane, leave, come back, and watch the canes for a while?

Plants will only grow when the chunk they are in is loaded, which is usually the chunks within a certain radius of the player or within a certain radius of the world spawn (The so-called Spawn Chunks).

This is the intended behaviour. In order for the sugar cane to grow, it requires blocks to be updated. Blocks within an unloaded chunk are not updated, and thus it will not grow. The behaviour is the same for, say, furnaces while cooking food. The food will not cook while the chunk is unloaded.

Ik how growing and such works with loading chunks, and this isnt really a bug, it seems the sugar cane is taking longer to grow than it used to for some reason, and i thought i wasnt growing at all. I was talking about if you had it planted, left the area, than when they were loaded again then even while sitting there loading the chunks the sugar cane still didnt grow

Make sure your sugar cane is planted adjacent to water. Also note that if you plant it on dirt, it will grow much less frequently than on sand.
