If you’ve fallen a lethal amount of blocks and use /tp to teleport above the ground, you die because your fall height and speed don't get reset when you teleport.

However, I don’t believe this is a bug.
MC-14861 was an issue where velocity reset upon teleporting and they fixed that so that you do build up velocity.

Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
Things such as graphics, sounds, world creation, biomes, redstone, villagers, and animals may not work the same in current versions.
