When summoning FallingSand with the id of a chest(54), it has the wrong texture when still a FallingSand entity(see pictures).
Command used:

Confirmed, however the falling texture on mine showed as wood planks.

I'm tempted to say this is working as intended. Blocks with abnormal rendering will render as other blocks while falling.
Thats not to say it shouldn't be changed, however.

Yes, the same is with any block without the regular cube model; torch, flower pot, redstone, repeater, etc, with the exception of anvils.

Intended; the FallingSand code only grabs specific models and pure texture data. It would be too advanced to fix this for now.

Why does it only do it wiht all the rest but one? Um the moderators needs to have a conversation with the developers and such as im tried of any bug i report being ignored/shoved off as resolved with no comment or explanation.....

Hah, seems like this was partially fixed even though WAI xP. Grass and biome texture related blocks have their correct texture now. (1.9 snapshots)
Edit: unless grass stuff coloring was already fixed in the 1.8 release...can't remember atm
