Partially transparent flower textures produce ghosting artifacts when mipmapped

See the attached screenshot. My png files are RGBA. In the screenshot you can see that on the poppy and daisy, the right-most part of the flower is partially obscured. Look closer and you can see a faint outline around the images in making up the flower that (barely) show the full background for the 512x512 image, even the transparent pixels. (I’ve put up the pack’s poppy.png file as well.)

If I instead save this file as indexed color, both the faint background and the obscuring go away.

I have checked the A value for the blank areas of poppy.png is 0, as it should be.

I have gone back and this does not happen in 1.21.11, but does in 26.1.

Thank you for helping us improve Minecraft! We saved your files:

This seems to be related to the mipmap changes and may be intentional without a poppy.png.mcmeta file

Why would an .mcmeta file be required for an RGBA file but not an indexed color file?

Not sure what your indexed file looks like since you didn’t attach it, but it’s likely it’s exporting without partial transparency, causing the game to automatically assign it the cutout mipmapping strategy instead of mean.

The vanilla game uses mcmeta files to give flowers the strict_cutout mipmapping strategy, even when using indexed textures. You should probably do likewise for yours.

Good point about the uploaded file. It’s attached here. You’re right about the partial transparency, it should have stored it that way because the edges are antialiased against transparency, but Photoshop doesn’t do that by default.

I have to admit I sorta wonder why files with partial transparency aren’t strict_cutout by default, but there’s probably something I’m not thinking of. Anyway, I will generate .mcmetas for any file I want partial transparency for. For me it’s just another python script, dunno how people doing it manually will. feel about that :-)

Ooops, here’s the indexed png file:

poppy.png

I also notice that I don’t have any problem I can see with my RGBA stained glass textures, and vanilla doesn’t have mcmeta’s for them.

I just copied the the poppy.png.mcmeta file to my pack and reloaded it, and the problem did NOT go away.

Interesting, I can’t reproduce the ghosting effect in your screenshots with either of the two images. I wonder if it has to do with a larger atlas, or your graphics hardware. Can you attach the entire pack?

Ah, never mind, I could reproduce it after backing up, even with the mcmeta file. Thank you!
