MC-308371

Particles from items use the particles associated with the model for the "ground" display type

Closely related to MC-123463.

When generating particles from an item, the “ground” display type is specifically checked, which often looks bizarre for items used in first-person, and also in third-person. A resource pack is attached to this ticket which can be used to reproduce this.

To reproduce, apply this pack and:

  • eat an apple

  • /give @s minecraft:stone_pickaxe[minecraft:max_damage=1] then break a block with this

Expected results: the particles used would come from the firstperson_lefthand or firstperson_righthand models.

Actual results: they come from the irrelevant ground model.

When generating particles, it may be worth not just taking the item model into account, but also the display type, for better consistency: ground particles make sense for thrown eggs and snowballs, but not eaten items or broken tools. This could perhaps be a new, optional field in the /particle command when generating item particles specifically.
