I noticed that items picked up by the cursor in creative mode do not get accessed properly under ‘player.cursor’ slot. At first, I just thought that slot didn’t read properly in creative mode, but placing an item there via commands does allow it to read properly.
This effects 26.2 as well, but most recent version it effects is 26.3 snapshot 2.
To test this, I used execute to test if an item is in the ‘player.cursor’ slot:
/execute if items entity @a player.cursor * run say Item In Player Cursorand to manually place it, I used
/item replace entity @a player.cursor with stick[minecraft:item_name="Player Cursor slot"]Linked issues

Realized the audio wasn’t very good in first video, so here’s a better one.
The behavior when an item is manually put into ‘player.cursor’ in creative mode is also weird- seems to always think there’s an item there until the inventory is closed, then it duplicates the item that was put there through command.
Have the same issue, did a report but I hadn't realized that the real problem was being in creative mode
Thank you for your report!
After consideration, the issue is being closed as Working as Intended.
Please note, that mechanics of the game may change between updates.
Things such as graphics, sounds, world creation, biomes, redstone, villagers, and animals may not work the same in current versions.
