Armadillos stop following players holding spider eyes after relog

Spent a long time leading a bunch of armadillos back to my home with a spider eye. When I rebooted the game a few hours later to finish the journey, they all completely stopped responding to the spider eye. I tried reloading the game and launcher several times, tried switching the item in my hand to something else and back to the spider eye, dropping the spider eye and picking it back up, and switching from 26.2 to 26.3 snapshot 3. Nothing worked. What can I do?
