Short description of the issue
When mobs try to head somewhere and there are some blocks higher than the destination, they often step on the higher blocks first instead of taking the direct path. And sometimes they may even fail to reach, stopping on the higher place.
Steps to reproduce the issue
This can be observed in these cases I have found:
In a house with a blast furnace, the villager wanting to find a job goes onto the smooth stone and can’t reach the blast furnace.
If the player hides in a lower hole and there are blocks higher nearby, the zombie trying to attack the player will step on the blocks first before turning to the player, though the blocks are farther away.
Expected result
They are expected to take the direct path.

The villager issue is bring tracked in MC-155269 and/or MC-160582. The issue with the zombie may be related to the pathfinding bias outlined here on the Minecraft Wiki, which I was unable to provide an existing report for; or it may be a separate issue. If you believe the behavior to be a bug, please make a new report about it and upload a video recording (with the F3 debug overlay enabled and showing the game version) showing how a zombie chasing a villager takes an illogical path– assuming, of course, that the issue also happens when they chase villagers and that it hasn’t been reported already.
I will resolve this report as a duplicate of both MC-155269 and MC-160582.
