Players in adventure mode cannot ignite TNT when the tool includes TNT in can_place_on component

Likely caused by the fix for MC-222818, TNT cannot be directly ignited by a player in adventure mode even if their flint and steel or fire charge in the can_place_on data component. The player can crouch to place fire against it, and if fire spread is enabled, the TNT may ignite, but otherwise the TNT will not be set off.

This breaks adventure maps that rely on the player’s ability to ignite TNT, such as to unlock new areas.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. In a new creative world, place a block of TNT.

  2. Give your player an item that can ignite the TNT with this command: /give @s minecraft:flint_and_steel[can_place_on=[{blocks:"minecraft:tnt"}]]

  3. Change your gamemode to adventure mode.

  4. Try to use the flint and steel on the TNT with the right mouse button.

Expected result:

  • The TNT ignites and explodes.

Actual result:

  • The player’s arm swings but nothing else happens.

Comments 1

TNT can be ignited using the can_break component instead.
