For single slabs, the slab side texture is used so that the slab doesn’t appear cut-off. However, stairs just use the raw polished full block texture for some reason. When viewed from head-on, this means that the front of the stair appears cut-off and visually blends into the back wall of the stair itself.
Easily fixed by assigning the slab side texture to the stair block accordingly - see screenshots.
