With the latest snapshot, the sidebar display slot no longer renders, regardless of what objective you have assigned to it.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create an objective of your choosing. For example, "/scoreboard objectives add test dummy".
2. Set this objective to display in the sidebar. With the above example, "/scoreboard objectives setdisplay sidebar test".
3. Give yourself a score in this objective. With the above example, "/scoreboard players set @p dummy 10".
4. Observe that, despite the fact that you have points in the objective, no sidebar renders on-screen.
It's worth noting that scores are tracked; they just won't display on-screen.

I see this bug is very old (and resolved), but for what it's worth, I'm encountering it currently and hope that there is some sort of work around and perhaps this bug can be reopened.
It was originally working, showing a Horse Speed value of something (I was playing around with values). I then created a new objective and wanted to display that as well, and when I did the side bar disappeared. I thought perhaps removing the first objective and re-displaying the sidebar might bring it back up - it did not. I tried removing the second objective and re-adding and re-displaying the sidebar, this did nothing as well.
I confirm this bug:
I have no display on the sidebar.
