I made a desert superflat world (using the preset) but with one change I made the sandstone only 10 high instead of 52. I left structures on. And I found a temple quite high up. Maybe the generation should be tweaked so that the temples are not forced to have thoes huge tunnels and they can be of varying height.

Actually i noticed that only the top 15 blocks is for the trap and tunnel. The rest is just sandstone.
You wanted a complete temple with tressure and trap - you got one. How else is the generator suppose to generate a structure that usually requires some underground space?
