Reflecting Ghast Fireballs is nearly impossible

When trying to deflect a Ghast Fireball, is is almost impossible, differing from previous versions, in which is was very easy to do so.

What I expected, when trying to hit the fireball, was for it to fly back up at the angle I hit it.

Instead, almost always, the fireball will most likely a) Phase through the punch/hit or b) Explode on contact with the punch/hit.

Steps To Reproduce:

1. Get a Ghast to fire at the player.
2. Try and hit the fireball with a single punch/hit. You will find this is hard, and that the player must spam-click to even have a chance at hitting it, and, even still, it will probably explode anyway.

This is a serious issue, as being unable to deflect the fireballs can result in damage and burning of structures, as well as player death.

I have experienced this problem as well. Seems to be harder to hit with arrows too. Thought it was just low fps.

I can confirm this.Even using bows it is hard to deflect ghast's fireballs.

insomniac_lemon

I can confirm this in 1.6.2. I think this issue is related to how arrows will land and then move because they realize they are supposed to be somewhere else. I think this because sometimes it looks like you have hit a fire charge, and then after flying in a deflected direction for a short amount of time, reverts back to its original trajectory (which is almost always just the nearby explosion).

Still happening in 1.7 pre-release, the SP/MP internal merge made impossible and glitchy things that were easy in SP before, and this is another example.

Preben Gjelsvik

How can this possible be an issue in "future version (1.8 ?), it hasn't been released yet...

Anon Ymus

Confirmed.

Sonicwave

Can confirm in 1.8.2-pre1.

Swekob

Confirmed for 15w45a.

I think this is intended because you can't hit mobs, which are entities like fireballs, from a long distance.

Also, if you just know that a short distance is what's needed to reflect the fireballs, it's not that hard.

@Swekob

Sure, I can understand that. But these fireballs are well within melee range. Stationary fireballs seem to be unaffected when spawned with no velocity data tag, but fireballs with velocity (all fired from a Ghast) are affected. While it is POSSIBLE to reflect the fireballs at close range, it's extremely unreliable to do so.

Originally, this bug came about due to the Singleplayer-Multiplayer merge, and I believe that may be the root cause, as it was not present beforehand.

I used to be able to deflect fireballs in MCPE with a sword but now it no longer works with the recent 0.15.1 beta release in Realms. It does work with a bow and arrow, much like a sword used to.

SunCat

@unknown, this ticket is about PC (Computer) version. It can be MCPE-14213 in your case. If not - create a new ticket.

FaRo1

I can deflect the ghast ball more than 50% of the time with one hit in 1.10.2. Does that mean it's fixed or am I just very good at it? 😃

It's just that you need to be very close to the fireball in order to deflect it. If you know that, you can do it 90% of the time. It is still "hard" though 😛

Alexander

Fixed as of 16w42a.

All ghastballs can be reflected with a single mouseclick (without spamming), as shown in this video:

Thank you Alexander for the helpful video.

Yes, it appears that this bug was fixed, at least as of 16w40a. Could be a result of the reworked data tags for Ghast Fireballs in that snapshot, but either way, this bug is finally resolved.
