Thunderous dark skies?

I noticed that the sky doesn't get this dark anymore since 1.3 came out during a thunderstorm. It used to get this dark in single player mode before it was made into an internal server. Never saw it like this in multiplayer as far as I can recall. Was this intentionally removed or is it indeed a lighting bug needing a fix? Screenshot attached was taken in 1.2.5, SSP since it's the last version that has the thunderstorm working properly.

Steps to reproduce.
1. Turn on rain
2. Turn on thunder
3. Sky doesn't change between rain and stormy weather.
