Redstone Torch causes black or transparent textures

When I placed a redstone torch on my hotbar, my textures turned black. I had to reboot minecraft to fix it. When I picked up a redstone torch as an item, it did it again. Rebooted minecraft. After placing the torch down, the textures turned black again but wouldn't come back after rebooting minecraft. I put in Faithful 32 textures and instead the textures became transparent or flashing. Only the sky was drawn correctly in the default pack.
